Ebonyi rights group demands prosecution of policeman who killed okada rider

The Committee for Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), has called for thorough investigation into the alleged killing of a commercial motorcyclist  in Abakaliki by a trigger-happy policeman.

The Ebonyi Chairman of CDHR, Mr Emeka Anosike, who addressed journalists on Thursday in Abakaliki, condemned the alleged extra-judicial killing.

Commending the Police for the arrest an arraignment of the killer-cop, Anosike stressed that thorough investigation be conducted into the killing.

“We in the human rights group condemn the gruesome killing of the innocent Nigerian in the line of duty over a purported refusal to give N50 bribe to the police.

“We demand that proper investigation into the killing be conducted to enhance effective prosecution and conviction of the alleged suspect.

“We commend Ebonyi Commissioner of Police, Mr Titus Sumba-Lamorde, for the immediate arrest and dismissal of the killer-cop, but demand that he be properly investigated, prosecuted and convicted in the interest of justice,” Anosike said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the victim, late Chukwuka Nwalo, was killed by a policeman on duty at Annan World junction along Water Works Road, Abakaliki on the night of Tuesday, April 25.

The suspect, Onyebuchi Nweke, was  arraigned on Monday, April 30, before an Abakaliki Magistrates’ Court. (NAN)
