The current governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has made some bold statements about how it was illegal for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the state’s financial transactions.

He explained that for such investigations to occur, the commission would need to override the Federal High Court’s Judgement which already stated that EFCC had “no powers” to do that.

The governor made this known when Mr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, the Managing Director Designate of Zenith Bank Plc, paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday, 9th of May, 2019.

“EFCC has no powers to look into our financial transactions” - Rivers Governor

In his words, “EFCC has no powers to look into our financial transactions. You cannot be giving our financial transactions to the EFCC, because that is illegal. Unless the EFCC sets aside the judgment, they have no powers to look into our financial transactions. Not that we are afraid, but due process must be followed”.

He then reiterated that should Zenith Bank ignore the directive of the high court, the state government would not hesitate to file the suits necessary and bring things to order.
