Some Nigerians have taken to social media to call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu.
Their demand is not unconnected to the monarch’s revelation that hoodlums carted away $2 million (app. N900 million) and N17 million from his palace during the #EndSARS unrest in October 2020.
Oba Akiolu disclosed this Wednesday at the commissioning of Glover Hall Memorial in Lagos, while lamenting the humongous losses incurred by Lagos state during the unrest.
Oba of Lagos said, “I will support anything that will move Lagos forward. I have appealed to the Federal Government to assist Lagos with what we have suffered. The incident that happened here from October 20th to 23rd is so saddening.
“The destruction we suffered in Lagos is so enormous than in any other part of the country.
“Many buildings were burnt, including vehicles used to generate income. I can now say publicly that they stole away from my palace $2 million and N17 million.
“Those who committed the offence would not have done that if they knew the implication. But as a father, I won’t place any curse on them.”

However, some Nigerians that took to social media on Thursday, called on the EFCC to invite the traditional ruler for questioning on how he came by such a humongous amount in the first place.
A UK-based Nigerian doctor, Olufunmilayo Ogunsanya wrote, “The Oba of Lagos said hoodlums stole 2million US Dollars and 17million naira from his palace.
“$2million alone is about 1billion naira. How do you have almost 1billion naira in your house?
“In a sane country, that man will be in a police station this morning answering questions.”
Another tweep,@ayemojubar tweeted, “Where did a king get $2m and N17m? How about the money-filled casket? EFCC your attention is needed.”
@Uncle_Ajala tweeted, “He (Oba Akiolu) should be telling EFCC what he was doing with that amount & how he got the $2m after this revelation, but this is Nigeria, even bandits dey ball.”
@Akeula_trendy wrote, “The devil that’s supposed to be Oba of Lagos’s friend has finally pushed him into EFCC’s den Face with tears of joyFace with tears of joy I hope Obas and Emirs Dey get immunity sha.”
