Dr Abdulwahab Anas, an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist, has warned against incessant use of earphones and headbands, saying that such could cause sores in the ear.

Anas told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja that earphones could mount mechanical pressure to the ear and cause sores or other related diseases to the ear.

He said sores could also be caused by environmental pollution, which could affect the ear in form of particles, leading to ear infection mostly caused by bacteria.

He also said that blows to the ear could result to noise in the ear which could wreck havoc such as sores and bleeding of ear drum.

The specialist said it was dangerous to use chemicals such as spirits to clean the ear, adding that such could also cause sore in the ear.

According to him, the ear is a sensitive organ of the body and large doses of drugs can send wrong signal to the ear and may disrupt the ear system.

Anas also warned that any infection at the upper respiratory organ like sore throat could spread to the middle ear and cause ear infection and sores.

The specialist said only an ear specialist could use curette to dig inside the ear canal to clean hardened wax.

“But a small clean cloth can be gently used to clean the external region of the ear; the cloth should be used mildly and not inserted deeply into the ear canal as that may push the wax deeper.

He added that other immune disorders such as HIV/AIDS could also cause sores. (NAN)
