The chances of Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama featuring in the forthcoming African Nations Cup holding in South African are currently hanging in the balance.
This is following the directive issued to coach Stephen Keshi by the Nigeria Football Federation that the Maccabi Tel Aviv of Isreal safe hands be excluded from the Faro, Portugal camping where the team is expected to perfect strategies for the African Mundial if his form continues to plummet.
Enyeama’s form in the national team colours has been suspected of recent, with the goalkeeper being blamed for certain goalkeeping mistakes which almost jeopardised the Eagles chances of staging a return to the tournament they failed to qualify for the last term in Gabon/Equatorial Guinea.
The NFF is of the opinion that Keshi might not be courageous enough to drop the goalkeeper who also doubles as the team’s assistant captain even if his form does not measure up to the required standard in camp. And to forestall the Eagles gaffer from showing undue sympathy to the player’s cause, the Glass House top officials are seriously considering the option of not inviting the goaltender to the pre-Nations Cup camp in the first place.
The move is to avail Enyeama the chance to garner more playing time at his Israeli club in the hope that he would regain his top form after which he might be recalled to join the squad ahead of the January competition.
It would be recalled that Enyeama was roundly condemned in several quarters for gifting the Lone Stars of Liberia two goals after the Eagles were already coasting to a valuable away victory in Monrovia.
The match eventually ended 2-2 but the Eagles went on to book the ticket to the Nations Cup following a convincing 6-1 victory in the second leg played in Port Harcourt.
