Ex-Kwankwaso Ally, Yunusa Dangwani, Defects to APC in Kano

Yunusa Adamu Dangwani, a former close associate of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and a prominent political figure in Kano State, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant defection ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dangwani announced his defection during a well-attended ceremony in Kano, which also saw dozens of former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members cross over to the APC. The event was led by Kano APC Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, and featured key stakeholders from the state chapter of the party.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dangwani praised the APC’s structure and leadership, saying his decision was based on a belief that the party was better positioned to deliver on its promises to Nigerians. “I am joining a party that has demonstrated the capacity to organize, mobilize, and lead with purpose. My decision was guided by the urgent need to be part of a movement that can genuinely improve the lives of our people,” he said.

The defection is widely seen as a political blow to Kwankwaso and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), especially in Kano—a crucial swing state with growing internal political realignments. Dangwani’s close ties with Kwankwaso had previously made him a key player in the NNPP’s grassroots machinery.

Welcoming the new members, APC chairman Abbas said the influx of defectors was a boost for the party’s ambitions in 2027. “This is a big day for our party. We are strengthening our base with experienced leaders and loyal supporters who will be given equal opportunities to contribute and grow,” he stated.

Dangwani’s move is expected to further reshape Kano’s political landscape as major parties begin their buildup to the next election cycle.
