Respected elder statesman and former Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, narrowly escaped with his life after an attempted attack on him was foiled by his security detail.

This was disclosed by Special Assistant (Media) to Tukur, Prince Oliver Okpala on Saturday.

According to Okpala, the octogenarian was on his way to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja when his convoy of four jeeps was attacked by a Hilux van that broke into the convoy, THISDAY reported.

He said the van, which had tinted glasses, appeared to be gunning for the jeep occupied by Tukur when the occupants of the three other jeeps stopped it.

Tukur was on the road leading to the Airport to take a flight to Owerri where he was to be awarded a doctorate degree by the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), when the foiled attack occurred, Okpala said.

The motive behind the attack is unknown, as Tukur earlier this year announced his retirement from politics when he clocked 80 in September.
