Facebook is getting tired of Android, currently working on own OS

Tech companies are growing weary of the Android dominance and their dependence on the OS in light of that Facebook is rumoured to be working on their own OS, the Facebook OS.

“We really want to make sure the next generation has space for us,” Facebook’s head of hardware, Andrew Bosworth, told The Information. “We don’t think we can trust the marketplace or competitors to ensure that’s the case. And so we’re gonna do it ourselves.”

There isn’t much information about the OS yet but the company’s recent acquisition Oculus is already tinkering with a modified version of Android. In a bid to deviate from Android it appears Facebook is using Android as a testing space for what’s to come.

Facebook may be going the Apple route. Reports from earlier this year says the company is working on its own chip.

The yarning for own OS was first attempted in 2013 when Facebook create its Facebook Home – basically a wrapper around Android, the attempt was a failure as the OS didn’t garner the favourable response it needs for survival. Will it be second time lucky for Facebook OS or twice shy, we’ll see.
