Mr. Weinstein appeared for the sentencing in wheelchair as his lawyers appealed for leniency. His lawyers appealed to the trial judge that a minimum sentence of five years would be a life sentence for their client.

Prosecutors however argued that Weinstein should be given the maximum sentence because of his lifetime of abuse towards women and his lack of remorse for his actions.

The Producer however addressed the court for the first time before his sentencing on Wednesday. He said he had a deep remorse for his actions but himself alongside other men were totally confused by events.

The top Hollywood figure had been assailed by allegations of sexual misconduct against dozens of women since October 2017, kick-starting the #MeToo movement . He consistently denied any wrongdoing until these charges made it to trial.

Mr. Weinstein still faces further criminal charges for rape and sexual assault in Los Angeles. His lawyers have vowed to appeal the conviction.
