Federal Palace Pizza: Could This Be The Best Kept Secret In Lagos?

5 Min Read

My wife’s cravings kicked in on Friday night at about 7pm. She wanted buffalo wings from a popular lounge on Lagos Island. She said if I didn’t get them, I shouldn’t bother getting anything else.

As she was eating for two, I felt doubly responsible and set out about an hour later to make the 30 minute drive. When I got there, alas they had closed for business – like they had stopped operations entirely. Everybody’s once upon a time favorite hangout at City Mall was closed. I didn’t know how to break the news to my wife. When I finally mustered the courage to call her, we agreed she would substitute her cravings to spring rolls and pepper sauce. My intention was to head to Mega Plaza or Marrocaine.  As I hit Awolowo road, the traffic was thick, at after 9pm on a Friday night because fuel marketers who hadn’t been paid subsidy were hoarding products. The fuel queues were intense. I decided to stop over at Ember Creek and have a few beers whilst waiting for traffic to wane out.

About an hour and two Heineken’s later, I had hit the road again on the way to VI. Traffic was still thick so I went through Muson. The road was a breeze in this direction.

Enroute I noticed I was passing by Federal Palace and decided to stop over and check. After all, a fancy hotel like the Fed just had to have prawn rolls.

I entered the side entrance and went towards the Casino bar. I asked the bar man if they had prawn rolls, alas they did. I let out a yell of excitement as I knew madam would be pleased. In my excitement I asked for the menu and I was happy to see pizza. I ordered for a selection that seemed appealing, however my kosher taste compelled me to substitute the smoked hams for mushrooms.

About 30 minutes later I was informed that the food was ready. Nicely packaged and all.

The entire bill was #3000 for a serving of 6 pieces of prawn roll. I had 2 servings and buffalo wings were about the same price. The pizza was #3500. The entire bill came to about # 10k.

I didn’t want to start eating the pizza until I took a picture  because it was so gorgeous but I left my phone in the car. By the time I got in my car to retrieve my phone, there was no table to place the pizza again to snap. I was starving. I dug in. I ate over half the pizza whilst driving (please don’t eat and drink or drive). The pizza was dripping with reamy cheese, and great toppings like olives and mushrooms. It really did have an authentic Italian feel. This was pizza made for pizza lovers who appreciate authentic pizza in terms of presentation and taste and not the commercial pizza you get from one of the many branches in Lagos. I’m pretty sure I won’t be having Pizza anywhere else unless it’s a four or five star hotel in Lagos. Federal Palace pizza has made me a convert.

By the time I got home and put the pizza in the fridge, there was only one slice left. I decided to take it a little easy #teamfitfam and save the rest for later.

As I set off towards the master bedroom to feed my wife, she was already asleep and did not want to eat anything again. Sure I wasn’t too happy about that but hey …. Pizza. 🙂
