Minister of Environment, Mrs Amina Mohammed says the Federal Government will implement the Nigeria’s National Determined Contributions (NDC) Sector Road-maps, aimed at reducing average global carbon emissions to two degrees Celsius.
Mohammed said this in Abuja on Friday when she was marking her one year in office.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Nigeria in collaboration with UNDP developed its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) and submitted INDC to UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) in 2015.
She said INDC was later translated into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
“The ministry submitted Nigeria’s INDC, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) before accompanying the President to the conference of parties on, otherwise known as COP 21.
“COP 21 is a conference where the World agreed to reduce average global carbon emissions to 2 degrees Celsius.’’
Mohammed said Nigeria’s INDCs spelt out that in the next 15 years, Nigeria would cut back on its carbon emission by 20 per cent on its own and 27 per cent with assistance from the climate change fund.
“On Sept. 22, 2016, Nigeria signed the historical Paris Agreement at a Side event in New York, signing Nigeria’s commitment for climate action and investment in sustainability.
According to her, the Federal Ministry of Environment will next year launch Green Bonds Project aimed at developing solar power, electric transport and forestation.
“It will continue the implementation of the UNEP Report on the Remediation of Ogoniland and increase efforts to resuscitate Lake Chad.
“The ministry will increase efforts to reclaim the desert through a new and improve Great Green Wall Strategy as well as strengthening and enforcing regulatory functions,’’ the minister said. (NAN)
