FRSC Warns Drivers Against Night Journeys

The FRSC on Saturday urged commercial drivers to plan their journeys ahead and refrain from embarking on night journeys to avoid accidents.

The FRSC Zonal Commander in-charge of Zone 9, Mr Samuel Obayemi, gave the advice while speaking at an ember month sensitisation programme for commercial drivers in Enugu.

Obayemi noted that night journeys were often subjected to the threats posed by armed robbery attacks, tyre burst as well as difficulty in attending to mechanical faults.

“Our people, especially commercial drivers, should plan their journeys by leaving on time in order to arrive safely at their destinations on time.

“If, peradventure nightfall meets you; you find somewhere to pass the night and continue the next day.

“It is better to be late by observing all good driving habits, which includes not driving at night, than to be declared dead,’’ he said.

He also advised commercial drivers to always buy good tyres as well as avoid overloading, saying these, most times, lead to tyre burst and breakdown of vehicles.

Chief James Aninwede, the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Enugu State, thanked the commission for organising the programme.

Aninwede pledged that the union would continue to counsel members on safe driving practices and appealed to the Federal Government to ban all forms of night travel.
