FRSC warns motorists against assaulting its personnel on duty

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has warned motorists against assaulting its officials, who are on duty.

The Anambra Sector Commander of the commission, Mr Sunday Ajayi, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday.

“Enforcement in Anambra state is challenging; there are a lot of people that will want to stand and face the personnel, challenging their authority on the road.

“It is not correct; we want to make it clear that it is not correct.

“It is a crime to assault road safety personnel who are performing their duties.

“So people should take note of this, because what we have decided is that anybody that is found guilty of assaulting road safety personnel will face the court and whatever the outcome, that person will face the music.’’

Ajayi said motorists should imbibe the culture of safety and not wait to be arrested or punished before acting safely.

He said the intention of the Federal Government was to ensure safety of life and property on the high way and that would be achieved if all stakeholders abide by the rules of traffic.

Ajayi recalled that the command lost some of its personnel to hit-and-run-motorist in 2015.

He lamented the rising cases of attacks on FRSC officials, which he said resulted into the death of personnel.

He said that offenders would face the full wrath of the law.

“We believe that the issue of safety is a way of life, because it has to do with life and death.

“So it is better we do the needful and stay alive than wait to be arrested before we do what is right.

“It might be too late to wait for somebody to arrest you.

“People should not wait to be arrested before they do the right thing and that is the only way we can complement the efforts of government at safeguarding lives and property on the high way.’’
