The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned owners of abandoned vehicles along the Onitsha-Awka express way to remove them or they would be confiscated.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Anambra, Mr Sunday Ajayi gave the warning during an assessment of traffic gridlock at Tarzan junction, Nkpor axis of the Onitsha –Awka express way on Thursday.
He also admonished those selling goods along the road to desist from the act
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tarzan junction and Nkpor market are noted for heavy traffic due to the encroachment of traders and parking of vehicles along the road
“You can see the encroachment on the road by human activities under the guise of parking vehicles and trading, thereby narrowing down the free passage of motorists.
“These are road abuses and we want to sound a note of warning to everybody that the highway is meant for passage and not business activities or parking lot.
“We shall no longer tolerate any illegal activity on the highway,” Ajayi said.
He wondered why owners of faulty vehicles and those gutted by fire would abandon them on the roads, while their mechanics had turned the highway into their workshops.
Ajayi said that such attitude did not support safety on the highway, saying that any obstruction on the road could cause accidents.
The FRSC boss, who did not give a time frame for the removal, further warned that items confiscated by the commission would be auctioned to the general public.
“By the time we come, we will come with pay loaders and other equipment needed to remove these items.
“We hereby warn the general public to make haste to remove them before we return, because we shall not allow the road to be turned to a market.” (NAN)
