Gambia Elections: President Jammeh Set to Concede Defeat

It appears that the presidential election in Gambia is reaching an upset as opposition candidate Adama Barrow has taken the lead after almost 75 per cent of votes had been counted.

Media reports are saying the incumbent president, Yahya Jammeh is likely to concede defeat within a few hours ahead.

Media sources are saying the president is preparing a recorded speech. Ruth Maclean, a reporter with the UK’s Guardian newspaper in The Gambia is tweeting details about the breaking news that President Jammeh is to concede defeat to opposition leader Adama Barrow.

Maclean says that a video of his concession speech is being prepared. One of her tweets reads:

“For 1 of Africa’s classic dictators to concede is a real turnout for the books. Many ppl in Gambia thought they had many more yrs of Jammeh”
