Ghanaian election: A milestone in African political journey-Expert

An expert in Peace and Conflict Resolution, Mr Ajibola Owolabi, has described the just concluded Ghanaian election as a milestone in African political journey.

Owolabi is the Executive Director, Advocacy for Advancement of Peace and Harmony in African Initiative (ADAPHAI), an NGO.

He made the remarks on Saturday in Osogbo while addressing news men on the outcome of the election.

Owolabi expressed delight that recent elections in some of the countries in Africa continued to give credence to the institutionalisation of matured political culture and new democratic philosophy in Africa.

He said that the political consciousness among the African electorate had risen to an enviable stage.

The peace advocate added that Africa now had many sophisticated electorate that knew how to vote and protect their votes without violence.

Owolabi expressed optimism that the entrenchment of credible polls, with free and fair political atmosphere, would contribute immensely to political stability and economic advancement on the continent.

The expert said, “Nothing guarantees stability like credible polls, where the pattern of votes reflects in the results of the election and popular will takes political prominence naturally.”

He congratulated the President-elect, Nana Akufor –Ado, for his perseverance and strong determination and commended him for his democratic maturity and display of sportsmanship.

“The recent turn of political events on the continent of Africa is very encouraging and inspiring; it portends more good things to come in the region and a confirmation of new political culture.

“I believe that with this feat, the era of rancorous elections is gone forever in Africa, African electorate have become more sophisticated and matured.

“It is my belief that the president-elect will reciprocate the trust Ghanaians repose in him by giving him their mandates and facilitate quick development in Ghana.

“It is also important for Akufor-Ado to reconcile all interests and hit the ground running with dynamic leadership style, the one that gives every Ghanaian a sense of belonging.” (NAN)
