Gov. Mimiko to honour Ondo’s sports heroes Sept. 20

The Ondo State Government will honour athletes who won medals for the state in various sports at the 2012 National Sports Festival, a state official said on Friday in Akure.

The State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Dayo Awude, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Gov. Olusegun Mimiko would host the athletes on Sept. 20 in Akure.

He also said the governor would officially receive the state’s athletes who represented Nigeria at the just-concluded Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

“The welfare of athletes remains important to the government and we will continue to do everything possible to encourage their development,” Awude said.

NAN reports that Team Ondo placed 6th on the overall medals table at the 2012 NSF in Lagos, winning 18 gold, 12 silver and 28 bronze, totalling 58 medals.(NAN)
