Government Official’s Car Torched In Suspected Attack

The car of Frauke Petry, leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), was set on fire Friday night, likely in an act of arson.

“Yesterday an act of arson was committed on my car,” Petry tweeted on Saturday, saying “just look what we’ve turned into.”

Police also assumed the blaze was set intentionally.

The AfD has taken a tough stance on migration, allowing it to capitalise on Chancellor Angela Merkel’s open-door refugee policy, which has come under criticism for allowing over one million migrants into the country last year.

While the AfD’s anti-immigration rhetoric has helped it to profit from conservative voters frustrated with Merkel’s refugee policy, it has also drawn strong critique from Germany’s political left. (dpa/NAN)
