Governor Peter Mbah Defects to APC, Cites PDP’s Failure to Recognize ‘People’s Voice’
The political landscape in Enugu State shifted today as Governor Peter Mbah officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking to journalists shortly after making the announcement in a state-wide broadcast, Governor Mbah dismissed suggestions that his move amounted to a betrayal of the PDP, the platform under which he was elected.
“This is not a betrayal; it is also not abandonment,” Governor Mbah stated. “It is more about understanding that I was entrusted with the people’s mandate by the people, and it is also a responsibility on me to carry that same mandate on a platform that will best serve the people.”
The Governor anchored his decision on the belief that the PDP could no longer “serve the people optimally” and accused the party of failing to recognize the voice of his constituents. He explained that the move followed extensive consultations with his people.
“It became clear to us that the platform on which that mandate was given may not serve us optimally, and then, in consultation with them, we decided that we’re now going to migrate to a stronger platform that will best serve them,” he added.
When pressed on whether he owed an apology to those who voted for him as a PDP member, Governor Mbah maintained that his primary loyalty lies with the people who gave him the mandate, not the political structure itself. His defection delivers a significant setback to the PDP in the South East region.
