Babajide Sanwo-Olu has spoken about his political career, saying he never saw himself as a politician for over a decade that he held public offices until 2018 when he emerged to contest as governor of Lagos state.
Sanwo-Olu disclosed this in a lecture he delivered on Thursday, December 12, at the 3rd Alumni Lecture of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association.
The Herald gathered that the title of the lecture was: ‘Professionals in politics: Panacea for sustainable national development.’
He said: “For all those years he was appointed to political offices, the governor said, “I saw myself purely as a professional – a technocrat- in politics and public service.
“was a bigger responsibility than anything I had ever done, and, and unlike everything before, not a role to which I could be simply appointed. I can say that it was at that point that I became a politician.”
Meanwhile, The Herald reported Babajide Sanwo-Olu, executive governor of Lagos state, revealed that some Executive Officers have not earned the right to the appellation “Your Excellency”.
The state governor made this revelation at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, King’s Court Parish, Lagos, during a service led by Pastor Ben Akabueze.
Pastor Ben Akabueze, the Head Pastor of the church is currently the Director-General of the Budget office and he was once a Commissioner that served in Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola’s administrations.
Sanwo-olu disclosed that his office was working on an executive order that would make it impossible for Executive Officers who performed poorly during office to be called “Excellency”
According to him, “I don ’t want title in front of my name. I am actually going to come up with an executive order. This Excellency thing, I think it is when you have finished and if you earn it, then you should be called Excellency.
“ If you haven ’t earned it, if you haven ’t delivered, there is nothing excellent in the Excellency. You are just Mr. Governor for crying out loud and it is only when you have finished the kingdom assignment, when you have finished God’ s work in the chosen place that you have been called to do, that people can say in truth that you are a good representation and you deserve to be called ‘Excellency.”
