A socio-cultural group, Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association (YYSA), has called for the translation of the Nigerian Constitution into three major national languages.

The group urged in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Friday that the constitution should be translated into Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa.
The statement signed by its National Leader, Mr. Olalekan Hammed, said that the translation would enable Nigerians understand the constitution better and promote culture.

It noted that majority of Nigerians found it difficult to quote the Nigerian constitution while discussing national issues because it was not in their local languages and also not easily accessible.

“There is a need to translate it into the languages to make it understandable by the public, likewise, it should be made accessible and free to the citizens,’’ it said.
The group urged the Federal Government to encourage citizens to possess a copy of the constitution.

It also urged lawmakers at the national, state and local levels to embrace local languages by sponsoring motions in their respective local languages.
YYSA said that such would avail the people of their various constituencies to understand them while watching their plenary sessions on television or listening to them on radio
