He succeeds English left-back Ashley Young who edges closer to an Inter Milan move.

Maguire is currently the most expensive defender in the world after his record £80m move to Old Trafford in August. The 29-year-old has featured in 29 matches for United.

“Everything about him tells me is a leader,” said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“Harry will keep wearing the armband now.”

Young has made just 18 appearances for the club this season with Marcus Rashford, David de Gea and Jesse Lingard stepping into his role at different times of the season.

Rashford was injured in the FA Cup tie against Wolves earlier on Wednesday.

“We will give him the absolute amount of time to find out,” said Solskjaer.

“Marcus will have more checks and treatment today but I am not holding my breath. I would think he wouldn’t be ready but there is still 48 hours, so let’s see.”
