NBC is powering back up “Heroes,” the drama that took television by storm for its inaugural 2006 season, for 13 new episodes.
Entitled “Heroes Reborn,” the new event series featuring all new super-powered characters will air in 2015 and will be shepherded by original creator Tim Kring.
“The enormous impact ‘Heroes’ had on the television landscape when it first launched in 2006 was eye-opening,” said NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke in a statement trumpeting the announcement Saturday.
“Shows with that kind of resonance don’t come around often and we thought it was time for another installment. We’re thrilled that visionary creator Tim Kring was as excited about jumping back into this show as we were and we look forward to all the new textures and layers Tim plans to add to his original concept.”
Just how much resonance the show about ordinary people who discover they have super powers still has, however, is up for debate. The show started strong in its first season with an average of 14.5 million viewers, but the fans’ loyalty was severely tested as the storylines became increasingly muddled.
“Heroes” was canceled after its fourth season, by which time fans and critics had deserted the show in droves.
Salke added that several of the show’s original cast — which included Hayden Panettiere, Milo Ventimiglia, Ali Larter and Zachary Quinto — may surface over the course of the storyline, which remains shrouded in secrecy.
The movie follows Fox’s decision to dust off its own dormant action drama, “24,” for another abbreviated season.
