How Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho Could Still Win A Champions League Medal

The Barcelona forward’s team might have been knocked out of the Champions League, he still has a chance to win a Champions League medal.

According to Sky Sports, Coutinho could still be privy to a medal if Liverpool win the competition.

The Reds are in a good position to do so after beating Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate to advance to the Semi-Finals where they could meet one of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Roma.

If they do win, UEFA rules stipulate that the Reds will receive 40 medals which they can then distribute and Coutinho could get one.

He scored 5 goals in 5 games for Liverpool in the group stages of the competition and therefore made a significant contribution to their campaign.

He left Liverpool for Barcelona in January and has settled into life in Catalonia.

Jurgen Klopp will have a final say in the matter, however, as he ultimately chooses who gets the medals.

Speaking on the matter, former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson feels it would be wrong for Coutinho to get a medal were Liverpool to win the Champions League

“He left Liverpool to go to Barca knowing he wasn’t going to play Champions League football at Barca,” he said. “Listen I got a medal in 1977 for Liverpool because I played until the semi-final, I don’t count it as a winner’s medal.”

“I’d like to think if we do go on to win it that he says no I don’t deserve it, I don’t care it’s wrong.” he said
