How Nigerians reacted to Aisha Buhari’s “First Lady” announcement

Nigerians have taken to social media to react to Mrs Aisha Buhari’s announcement that she should henceforth be addressed as “First Lady” and not “Wife of the President”.

Speaking at a ceremony for wives of governors in Abuja on Thursday, she said, “When my husband was elected newly, I personally chose to be called the wife of the president.

“But I realised that it was causing confusion from the state as to whether the wives of state governors are to be addressed as the first ladies or wives of the governors.

“So, forgive me for confusing you from the beginning, but now I choose to be called the first lady.”

Buhari had said in the build-up to the 2015 election that he would not recognise the position of First Lady as it was unconstitutional.

His wife agreed at the time but that changed on Thursday.
