How Reps Panel Report Will Determine the Fate of El-Zakzaky

It has been reported that the investigation by the House of Representatives into the clash between soldiers and members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria in Zaria will be rounded off next week.

The first in a line of enquiries set up after the killing of hundreds of Shi’ites by soldiers on December 12 and 13.

Recall that the event which is now known as Zaria Killings started when Soldiers accused Shi’ites of preventing the convoy of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai from making its way to the Emir of Zaria’s palace.

The Speaker of the House, Mr. Yakubu Dogara while initiating the committee said “The committee conducting the investigation has held several meetings with the stakeholders. They have met with some security chiefs and the Shi’ite members themselves.

“Considering the fact that the House gave the committee a very short time frame, the report will be presented when we resume next week.”

The House Committee on National Security and Intelligence was saddled with the responsibility of conducting the investigation.

Headed by Mr. Aminu Sani-Jaji, the committee has met with Acting Director-General of the Department of State Services, Mr. Lawal Daura, Buratai and members of the Shi’ites sect.

Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky has been in custody ever since the Zaria Killings, members of the sect has demanded for his unconditional release and that of other members of the sect in custody.

The report of the House Committee will go a long way in determining his fate and that of the entire Shi’ite sect in Nigeria.
