Hungry Burglars, Break Into Lagos Canteen, Steal Pots of Soup

In a bizarre incident sounding like a script from a comedy skit, a restaurant owner has cried out about being robbed of her pots of soup by burglars who broke into her canteen on Monday night/Tuesday Morning.

The incident occurred at a local canteen Testimony Kitchen located at Adejonwo close, off Jonathan Coker road, Fagba area of Lagos State, where several unknown persons broke into the canteen before dawn carted away coolers of soup, meat rice and beans.

The owner of the local canteen had prepared the soup and some food overnight for early callers the following day.

To her dismay however, she resumed work on Tuesday morning and discovered her shop had been burgled and all her food stolen; this meant she had nothing to sell to her  customers, many others who came to get food for their kids set for school, were also astonished at the development.

According to a resident of the area, Mrs. Ayodele Adebayo;

“I have witnessed four similar incidents in the past few weeks. People are hungry and what they have resorted to is breaking into people’s shop to steal foodstuff, soup and meat. If you catch them they will explain to you that they are hungry and have no other option. The family who stole my co-tenant’s food was even asking whether they could still get more to eat. It is that bad. People are really hungry. Recession has only ended on the pages of newspapers.”

The situation is surprising as well as eye opening because it signifies that the economy has deteriorated to the level where ordinary Nigerians now resort to stealing food and not cash or valuable items.

Several cases similar to this had been recorded in Kwara state when state government workers went about ten months without their salaries. Then some parents reportedly attempted to sell their children in exchange of food.
