Prof. Lai Olurode, a former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commison (INEC) has expressed doubt in the possibility of restructuring Nigeria.

Olurode while delivering a lecture titled: “Nigeria:development Conundrum,” at the 6th Annual Symposium of the Muslim student society of Nigeria, Bank Zone, in Ado Ekiti, said that no one will consent to a restructure without gain.

He called for national unity, stressing the need for religious illiteracy to be put to an end in Nigeria in order to achieve national integration.

While many groups have called for the restructuring of Nigeria, Arewa Consultative Forum was credited to have pledged its support to it saying such a move will strengthen the unity of Nigeria with equal rights for all citizens.

The Northern Elders Forum has also stated that the north is ready for dialogue with other regions of the country n restructuring.

Olurode in his statement said, “Restructuring can only succeed if there is “a win-win outcome” for all the various sections agitating in the country.

“No one will allow restructuring that gives no gain. It must be a win-win situation.

“Restructuring is not when you want more money in your pocket, while other parties lose. It must be genuine and foster national unity.

“It should not be punitive; use best examples across the world of systems that thrive in spite of pluralism.”
