The Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has urged Nigerians to imbibe the Four Way Test mantra of Rotary International to achieve the desired change in the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Speaker made the call on Saturday at the 7th Conference of Rotary International, District 9125 that held in Abuja.
The Speaker, who was represented by the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Pally Iriase, said that if every Nigerian applied the principles preached by the Rotary, the country would be better for it.
“The Four Way Test of Rotary is all about building good character and positive change in society.
“A citizenry that identifies itself with it will become more patriotic to the fatherland.
“In the same way, public servants who practice the Four Way Test will eschew corruption and sharp practices in the discharge of their duties.
“Besides, if government policies and programmes are guided by this unique four way test, the country will definitely change for good,” he said.
The speaker noted that since the present administration was riding on the mantra of change, it was imperative to imbibe the Rotary test, even in governance.
“The Rotary International has over the years carved a niche for itself as one of the foremost organisations that promotes service to humanity.
“Any people-driven leadership has some lessons to learn from it,’’ he said.
NAN reports that the Four Way Test as the guiding principle of the Rotary poses four questions about how, what one thinks, says or does and how it affect others in the society.
The FCT Minister, Alhaji Muhammad Bello, who was represented by Mr Buba Gumawa, extolled the contributions of the Rotary International to humanity.
“Wherever there is need, Rotary will be willing to meet those needs, and it preaches peace, stability and service to humanity.
NAN reports that the club also conferred awards on people who distinguished themselves in the society.
The club’s District Governor, Dr Mike Omotosho, decorated the recipients of the awards on behalf of Rotary International and commended them for their hard work in building the society.
The recipients include HRH Sale Muhammadu Umar (OON), the Mai of Kaltungo, Gombe State, Speaker of the House of Representatives and the FCT Minister.
The theme of the 2016 District Conference is “Celebrating being a Gift to the World”. (NAN)
