The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday registered Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA) and four other new political parties.

Adedeji Soyebi, the commission’s national commissioner and chairman, information and voter education committee, disclosed this at a news conference in Kaduna on Wednesday evening, TheCable Nigeria reports.

Soyebi spoke at the end of a meeting of resident electoral commissioners (RECs) and administrative secretaries from the 36 states of the federation.

He listed the other parties registered as: New Generation Party of Nigeria (NGP), Young Progressive Party (YPP), All Democratic Peoples Movement (ADPM) and Action Democratic Party (ADP).

Soyebi also said the applications of 90 associations were rejected because they did not meet the constitutional requirements for registration.

‎”The commission today approved the applications of five of the associations which have fulfilled the constitutional requirements for registration,” he said.

The registration of the new parties brings the total number of political parties in Nigeria to 45.
