The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced its intention to commence electronic voting across the country in 2021 in wake of the new lifestyle changes forced upon the country by COVID-19.

According to the Electoral Commission, COVID-19 as well as the rising cost of conducting physical ballot elections has forced it to adopt technology in the discharge of its mandate.

The electoral umpire said this In a document it released in Abuja on Monday, titled; “Policy on Conducting Elections in the Context of the Covid-19 Pandemic.”

INEC is also canvassing against the tradition of conducting bye-elections to replace dead political office holders.

It said it was having discussions with members of the National Assembly on how Political Parties can nominate replacements for deceased Political office holders.

This idea is premised on a supreme court judgement that votes cast in an election belongs to the party and not the individual.

INEC also announced that people without facemasks will not be allowed access to the polling units during the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.
