Is Alex Iwobi’s Everton move is a step down?

Everton, on the final day of the transfer window, made a surprise move for Alex Iwobi.

The Nigeria international commanded a national record transfer fee of 40 Million Euros to switch allegiances from Arsenal FC to the Merseyside club.

The 23-year old broke into the senior side at the Emirate Stadium at the age of 17. He won 3 FA Cups and one Community Shield.

Over the past few seasons, his development seems to have peeked all too prematurely raising concerns from Arsenal faithful all around the world, injury spells and less game time may or may not have contributed.

All too many times we see players on the rise and in very good form only for injury to hit and they never quite reach that level again.

The Academy graduate was in need of some change in fortune and maybe this was it.

As expected, this move has generated mixed reactions among Gunners supporters. Alex Iwobi himself has chosen to see the move as a step up for him.

According to him, “The manager was telling me: ‘There is a spot for you, we will take care of you’. Basically, all the things you want to hear as a player. He has given me the confidence I will do well. I am ready for a new challenge and chapter in my life. I always had that youngster tag at Arsenal, so hopefully, with this move, I am able to make a name for myself in the Premier League and create history with Everton. Hopefully, I will be able to take on a bit more responsibility and add something to the team as well.”

We wish Alex all the best as he takes on this new challenge in his footballing career. Eventually, he had to move somewhere, why not Everton?
