Senator Shehu Sani has described the constant bashing of Nigeria on international television due to cyber-crime as “painful”.

Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, stated this in a tweet on his verified Twitter handle on Saturday morning.

Sani lamented that Nigeria had become synonymous with scam email.

The Herald recalls that the US Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) said in June 2018 that they had arrested 74 persons, including 29 in Nigeria, in an international sweep for perpetrators of complex business e-mail compromise (BEC) schemes that had led to the loss of millions of dollars.

A 2018 Washington Post business report based on the arrests was titled, “It’s time to stop laughing at Nigerian scammers — because they’re stealing billions of dollars”.

The report read in part: According to FBI figures…victims of such scams reported $275 million in losses in 2015. By 2017, reported losses had more than doubled, to $675 million. And in the first quarter of this year, more than 4,000 victims reported $685 million in losses. The bureau estimates American businesses have lost more than $3.7 billion as a result of the schemes.

Sani said, “Its painful when you hear crime analysts talking on international news channels and saying things like ‘..those scam emails from Nigeria with tales of millions of dollars in their accounts'”
