Iwobi Confident Super Eagles Will Qualify for 2026 FIFA World Cup
Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed strong confidence that the Super Eagles will secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a difficult start to their campaign.
Nigeria finished second in Group C behind South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, but Eric Chelle’s team managed to earn a spot in the playoffs after an impressive turnaround in their final matches.
The Super Eagles are set to face the Panthers of Gabon in the semi-final of the playoffs on Thursday, November 13, in Rabat, Morocco.
Speaking in an interview with CNN, Iwobi said the team is determined to make Nigerians proud by booking a place at the tournament.
“We’ve managed to rescue ourselves from the dead,” the midfielder said. “We know we have the players and the abilities to compete against any other country in the world.”
He added that Nigeria’s recent individual successes in Africa prove the team’s potential: “We have last year’s African best player, Ademola Lookman, and the year before that, Victor Osimhen. It’ll be a shame if we don’t make it, but we have a lot of confidence. We just have to prove it to ourselves.”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with Nigeria hoping to return to the global stage after missing out on the 2022 edition in Qatar.
