JUST IN: Boris Johnson elected British Prime Minister

The Conservative Party of the United Kingdom has elected Boris Johnson as the next Prime Minister.

Johnson, a former London Mayor will on Wednesday take over from Theresa May, who has led the country for the past three years.

The keenly contested race ended with him and Jeremy Hunt as the favourites. He won the poll with 92, 153 votes, while Hunt garnered 46, 656 votes.

In his acceptance speech, Johnson assured Britons of uniting the UK, while delivering on his promise of leaving the European Union.

May had in July resigned from his position as the leader of the Conservatives following months of tumultuous, but failed efforts to take the country out of the EU.
