JUST IN: Buhari Suspends Babalakin, Ogundipe Over UNILAG Crisis

President Muhammadu Buhari has suspended Dr Wale Babalakin and Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe from their duties at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

While Babalakin is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council, Ogundipe is the embattled Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

The president, who is the Visitor to the institution, suspended the duo in a statement signed by the spokesman of the Federal Ministry of Education, , Ben Goong on Friday.

He said the duo were to recuse themselves from official duties, pending the outcome of the Special Visitation Panel set up by him.

Buhari gave the panel two weeks to submit its report.

“FG directs Pro -Chancellor / Chairman of Governing Councilof the University of Lagos , Dr . B. O . Babalakin and the Vice Chancellor , Prof . Oluwatoyin T . O . Ogundipe to recuse themselves from official duties, pending the outcome of the Special Visitation Panel set up by the President . Details shortly,” the statement read.

This is just as the Senate of the university was directed to reconvene to appoint an acting VC.

Recall that the Babalakin-led Governing Council removed Ogundipe on August 12, citing misconduct, and appointed Prof. Omololu Soyombo in his stead.

However, Ogundipe rejected his removal and headed to court.
