Just In: Chinese national quarantined for coronavirus in Lagos

A Chinese national who arrived at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos state on Tuesday, March 3, has been quarantined at the state Isolation Centre over the fear of coronavirus.

The commissioner for health in Lagos state, Akin Abayomi, who made this known on Tuesday explained that the Chinese man was asked to go through the compulsory screening as a stipulated precautionary measure.

Abayomi said samples have been collected from the Chinese national for test to determine if he is infected with the disease.

The commissioner, however, stated that the government would make known to the public immediately the test result is out, urging residents of the state to embrace the best hygiene possible.

Earlier, The Herald reported that first case of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been confirmed by Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Ehanire confirmed the case in a statement issued in the early hours of Friday, February 28.

The statement read: “The case involves an Italian citizen who works in Nigeria and just returned from Milan, Italy on the 25th of February 2020.”

The Italian citizen was confirmed to be positive by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, part of the Laboratory Network of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The minister, however, noted that the patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.
