Argentine football legend and one of the sport’s greatest ever players, Diego Maradona has died aged 60.

Maradona died Wednesday of a heart attack in his home in Buenos Aires, the Argentinian capital.

Before his demise, the football great was billed for treatment for alcohol dependency, after a successful operation for blood clotting earlier in November.

The coach of Gimnasia celebrated his 60th birthday on October 30 and was hospitalised shortly after.

But upon the successful surgery, he was discharged from the hospital as an outpatient to continue his convalescence, which he carried out in his dwelling in a private neighbourhood near Tigre, northern Buenos Aires.

However, he suffered a cardiac arrest on Wednesday and the paramedics on the scene could not revive him.

Among many iconic moments, he scored the ‘Hand of God’ goal in the quarterfinals at the 1986 World Cup against England, helping his country lift the highly-coveted trophy.

In a social media statement, the Argentine Football Association said expressed “its deepest sorrow for the death of our legend”, adding “You will always be in our hearts.”

The President of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez declared three days of mourning for the departed Maradona.

“You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of them all.

“Thank you for having existed, Diego. We’re going to miss you all our lives,” Fernandez said in a statement.
