The Kaduna State Government has confirmed 12 persons dead in a ghastly accident that occurred on the Kaduna-Abuja Road.

Samuel Aruwan, The Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, disclosed this on Wednesday.

In a statement released, Aruwan revealed that 25 other persons were left injured in the accident.

He explained that the accident involved a trailer.

Aruwan blamed the accident on over speeding, disregard of traffic rules and regulations by the drivers involved and the bad road.

He stated that two dead bodies, which were trapped beneath the wreckage of the trailer, had been removed.

“Twelve (12) persons were killed in the crash, with 25 injured, who are now receiving treatment in hospital. Several livestock also perished in the accident,” the statement read in part.

“The crash, which involved a trailer, was caused by a combination of speeding, road defects, driving against the direction of traffic, and loss of control. These caused the trailer to veer off the pavement and overturn.

“The Commissioner, Internal Security and Home Affairs, Kaduna State, today led extensive patrols along the Kaduna-Abuja highway to enforce compliance with the ban on driving against the direction of traffic.

“The scene of the crash has been cleared up, and security agencies have ensured there is normal movement of traffic along the route,” the statement continued.

The Commissioner stated that the state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, had expressed his heartfelt sympathy over the tragic accident.

The Governor, he said, has sent condolences to the victims’ families.

According to Aruwa, Gov. El-Rufai admonished residents of the state to adhere to traffic rules and shun dangerous road practices.

He urged residents plying the highway to refrain from speeding, overloading, reckless driving and driving against the flow of traffic.

Gov. El Rufai, he said, reminded citizens that such practices had been prohibited by the Kaduna State Government, 1 week ago.
