Kaduna: How troops foiled fresh attempt to kidnap 307 students

The Kaduna State Government has disclosed that armed bandits attempted to kidnap 307 students of Government Science Secondary School, Ikara in Kara Local Government Area of the state but were repelled.

The state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan said in a Sunday briefing that the bandits attacked the school between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

He said that the assailants were repelled by a joint team comprising personnel of the Nigerian Army and the police as well as some security volunteers.

The incident occurred a day after more than 30 students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Igabi LGA were kidnapped.

Their abductors released a video on Saturday in which they demanded N500 million as ransom for the kidnapped students.

Aruwan said, “The Kaduna State Government has called this briefing to address you on some recent events with respect to the security situation in the State.

Between the late hours of Saturday night and the early hours of today, suspected bandits stormed the Government Science Secondary School, Ikara, Ikara local government area, in an attempt to kidnap students.

“Fortunately, the students utilized the security warning system in place, and were thus able to alert security forces in the area.

“The security forces comprising the troops of the Nigerian Army, Police and some security volunteers moved swiftly to the school and engaged the bandits, forcing them to flee.

“The military and police are still on the trail of the armed bandits.

“Following a headcount by the school management, the Kaduna State Government can confirm to you that all 307 students have been verified safe and present. The attempted kidnap was foiled completely and no student was taken from the school.”
