Kenneth Okonkwo Accuses Peter Obi of Betrayal Amid Labour Party Crisis

Veteran Nollywood actor and former Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has accused Peter Obi of betrayal over the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.
In a recent interview with Symfoni that went viral on Saturday, Okonkwo claimed Obi turned his back on him and reneged on his stance against the embattled Julius Abure-led faction, which Okonkwo described as undemocratic and compromised.
“Peter Obi betrayed me,” Okonkwo declared, explaining that despite warning the former presidential candidate about the implications of aligning with the Abure group, Obi went ahead to publicly endorse them. According to him, Obi was misled by LP executives who falsely claimed they had been recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“I told him that aligning with them would destroy his integrity and political career,” Okonkwo said. “But within 72 hours, he went to Abure’s office and publicly endorsed them. I even received a mocking video from one of the faction members.”
Okonkwo, who officially left the Labour Party in February 2025, maintained that his decision was rooted in principle. He stated that Obi’s endorsement contradicted the party’s democratic values and reformist image.
The Labour Party has been riddled with internal conflict, with the Abure-led faction facing accusations of financial impropriety and anti-democratic conduct. Okonkwo alleged that the group had become “agents of the government” working to destabilize Obi’s influence.
He added that it wasn’t until INEC distanced itself from Abure that Obi began portraying himself as neutral. “But I told him he couldn’t be neutral,” Okonkwo said. “Something had to be done.”
Obi is yet to respond to the allegations as of the time of this report.
