Describing the experience as “traumatic”, a revered cleric, who was abducted with his wife by unknown gunmen in December 2015, has called on the government to do something to address the menace of kidnapping in the country.

Rt. Rev. Gabriel Adebanjo, the Bishop of the Lagos Central Diocese of the African Church said on Thursday that the government should as a matter of urgency address the menace before it becomes an insurmountable problem.

Adebanjo was abducted while travelling to Warri, Delta State and his driver was shot.

He spent 10 days in the kidnappers’ den, while his wife spent 20.

They secured their release after an undisclosed amount was paid as ransom.

Proffering a solution to the problem, he said that a strong legislation and enhanced security would serve to curb the activities of the perpetrators of the devilish act who are out to make quick money.

“The country needs to look for a solution to this problem because it is becoming more rampant and nobody is safe.

“I think what we should do as a society is to come up with a very strong legislation that would ensure that people who kidnap others are severely punished, so it will act as a deterrent to others.

“Government should, through legislation and improved security, put an end to this menace.
