Klopp, Martinez and Simeone favourites to replace Wenger

The long-term future of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal remains in doubt and the north London club have prepared a shortlist of managers to succeed the Frenchman, according to the Mirror.

Wenger’s current deal at the Emirates Stadium expires at the end of this season and as yet no new contract has been signed by the 64-year-old.

The Gunners boss has made several nods to the fact that he will stay, but many think that will depend on whether their nine-year trophy drought can be ended.

Wenger has admitted that the north Londoners are out of the Premier League title race and they have also been eliminated from the Champions League, meaning the FA Cup is now their only realistic chance of silverware.

Therefore a contingency plan is being prepared, with Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp, Roberto Martinez of Everton and Atletico Madrid ace Diego Simeone the three main choices.

All three have been impressing at their respective clubs in recent times and are all young coaches with great credentials in management.

Klopp is the most successful and experienced of the trio, with two Bundesliga titles and a Champions League final to his name.

However, at the moment Simeone’s Atletico team are leading La Liga ahead of giants Barcelona and Real Madrid and the Argentine has also won the Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and the Copa del Rey whilst at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Martinez meanwhile is the least successful of the three, but does have bags of experience in England and did lead Wigan Athletic to a shock FA Cup victory last year, beating Manchester City in the final.
