The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two policemen who were caught counting money made from gambling while on duty.

The arrested policemen were also smoking near a bank in the Opebi, Ikeja area of the state when they were apprehended.

The Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, who frowned on policemen engaging in distracting activities while on duty, ordered their arrest.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said in a Tuesday statement, “The attention of the state Police Command has been drawn to the news making the round on social media that policemen received bribes and they were smoking.

“Based on the allegation, the commissioner of police has ordered the arrest, detention and trial of the policemen.

“Meanwhile, preliminary investigation into the case has revealed that the policemen were not counting money they received as bribe as alleged but coupons they collected from gambling.

“The men are currently facing disciplinary action that could lead to reduction in their ranks or dismissal.”

The statement added, “The police commissioner encourages members of the public to always expose, albeit accurately, undisciplined and unprofessional policemen.”
