A commercial bus driver, Segun Odueso, 28, on Thursday appeared in a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly smashing bottles on his neighbour’s head.

The police charged Odueso, who resides in Bariga, Lagos,  with assault.

The Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 5 at 7.30p.m. at No. 10, Laula Ibrahim Street, Bariga, Lagos.

Oriabure alleged that the defendant assaulted his neighbour, Mr Sunday Omue, during an argument.

He said the defendant claimed that he assaulted the complainant because he insulted him a day before.

“My lord, Odueso broke bottles on Omue’s head and used the pieces to stab him on his arms, his face, his head and also his neck.

“He was taken to hospital and had to get stitches,” the prosecutor said.

Oriabure said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Section 174 stipulates three years jail term for the offence of assault upon conviction.

The Magistrate, Mrs S.O. Obasa, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Obasa ordered that the sureties must be above 40 years of age and must be gainfully employed.

She further ordered that the sureties must also show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Obasa adjourned the case until Aug. 28 for mention. (NAN)
