Lekki Building Collapse: Death Toll Hits 25

Emergency services involved in the rescue of victims trapped under the rubble of the five-storey building that collapsed in the Lekki area of Lagos on Tuesday have confirmed that the death toll has risen to 25.

According to Ibrahim Farinloye, South West Spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), five more bodies were recovered from under the rubble on Wednesday, The Nation reports.

The figure was confirmed by Michael Akindele, the General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), who added that 18 bodies were recovered from the rubble on Tuesday.

This is just as the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, condoled with the families of the victims.

In the same vein, in a statement through the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, the governor directed Lekki Gardens, the company behind the construction of the collapsed building.

The governor attributed the building collapse to breach of safety standards, and directed the directors of the company to report to the Inspector General of Police in 24 hours.
