Court Records Destroyed As Fire Guts Court Building

Bende Customary Court and some office blocks were consumed by fire on Saturday in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.

The Local Government Chairman, Dr. Hagler Okorie, said that the damage by the fire would cost millions of naira to rebuild, including records of court proceedings and exhibits among others.

The source of the fire is yet to identified.

Okorie expressed gratitude that no casualties were recorded. He ordered council staff to clear bushes around offices and residential quarters.

Okorie further urged staff members to ensure all electrical appliances are switched off when not in use and especially at the close of work.

Dr. Okorie called on the urgent intervention of federal and state government to assist the LGA in rebuilding the damaged structures so as “to restore normal official functions of the court and the council”.
