UK Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss has defeated challenger and former Chancellor, Rishi Sunak to emerge as the Leader of the Conservative Party.

On Tuesday, she will succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister, becoming the third female to hold the office.

Struss, 47, secured 81,326 votes against Sunak’s 60,399, a 57 – 43 percent victory.

In her acceptance speech, she thanked her “friend” Johnson, saying he was “admired from Kyiv to Carlisle”

“You got Brexit done. You crushed Jeremy Corbyn. You rolled out the vaccine and you stood up to Vladimir Putin,” Struss said about Johnson, who will depart No. 10 officially on Tuesday.

The new party leader indicated that she would not be triggering a new general election just yet, indicating this would happen in 2024.

She said her priority was to deliver in the next two years.

“I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy, dealing with people’s energy bills and also the long term problems we have with energy supply,” she said.

Johnson will meet Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle, her country home in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, on Tuesday to formally tender his resignation from office.

Truss will also visit the castle shortly after, and the Queen will invite her to form a government.
