The congress gave the commendation during the 2020 May Day celebrations, with the theme “COVID-19 Pandemic and its Socioeconomic Impact on the Nigerian Working Class.”

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Sunusi Alasan and the Secretary, Abubakar Yushau, it noted that workers had been law-abiding and had thus helped in keeping the number of coronavirus victims very low in the state.

The NLC urged workers to continue to be patient and ensure strict adherence to the laid down measures in the fight against the deadly pandemic.

It also saluted the frontline health workers, who, it said, were leading the fight against coronavirus at a great risk, not only to themselves but to their immediate families.

The congress called on government to provide adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) and enhanced hazard allowances for health workers.

It appealed to government to re-consider allowing tricycle operators to operate under strict conditions to ease the movement of those on essential duties, especially the health workers.

The congress, however, commended state government for the distribution of palliatives in the areas affected by the lockdown and urged it to expand the gesture to other areas populated by the needy and the vulnerable.

It also urged corporate bodies and wealthy individuals to support the government with relieve and sanitation materials to cushion the effects.

The congress appreciated the continued payment of salaries and pensions, in spite of the financial challenges posed by the pandemic and the attendant falling global oil prices.

It urged workers in the state to continue to support the government in ensuring the welfare and wellbeing of the people of the state.
