Mahdi Shehu Warns Nigerians Abroad Against Believing Akpabio’s Remarks on Nation’s Condition
Public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has warned Nigerians in the diaspora not to believe recent remarks made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio about the state of the nation, describing them as deceptive and misleading.
In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Shehu accused Akpabio of presenting a false image of progress and stability, urging Nigerians abroad not to be swayed by what he termed political propaganda.
“139 million Nigerians are facing visible hunger, 60 million jobless and unemployed youth, and over 30 million children are suffering from severe malnutrition,” Shehu wrote. “Nigeria’s debt stock is now at N170 trillion and still counting. Come back home at your own risk.”
He supported his claims with biblical references, including Psalm 10:7 — “His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue” — and Ephesians 5:6, which warns against deception through “empty words.”
According to Shehu, Nigerian leaders have institutionalized dishonesty, prioritizing false narratives over genuine governance. “Our leaders have made lying a trade and deception a permanent culture,” he said.
He maintained that Nigerians living abroad should not be carried away by optimistic political speeches that do not reflect the country’s harsh economic realities, adding that truth and accountability remain crucial to rebuilding national trust.
